How Lumbar Steroid Injections Deliver Back Pain Relief

Lumbar steroid injections deliver steroids directly to the irritated nerves in your lower back to help ease pain.

We recently added the Epidural Steroid Injections for Back Pain and Leg Pain Video to our HealthRcovered Video Library to help you visualize how these injections may help.

A nerve root leading out of the spine may become inflamed and irritated by many spinal conditions, including a lumbar herniated disc, shown above.

When this happens, you may experience pain, tingling, and/or numbness along the pathway of the nerve, known as radiculopathy.

Your doctor may prescribe an epidural steroid injection to help reduce inflammation around the spinal nerves and decrease your symptoms.

To get started, your doctor will ask you to lie on a cushion on your stomach. This position will open up your lower back and give the needle more room to go in.

Next your doctor will numb the area around the injection site with anesthetic.

Your doctor will then guide a needle into the epidural space, using X-ray imaging and contrast dye to ensure proper placement.

Once the needle is in place, your doctor will deliver the injection, which will include a local anesthetic and saline along with a steroid mixture.

These medications are injected around the nerve roots, and will give immediate pain relief. It will also flush the area of inflammatory proteins.

Once the medication has been injected, your doctor will remove the needle and place a small bandage over the injection site. You will be monitored for a short amount of time, and will be allowed to go home soon after the procedure.
